Comment on “The Cove” and the Problem of Documentary ‘Solutionizing’ by Dyske http://jasonjcrawford.com/2010/03/07/the-cove-and-solutionizing/#comment-89 Dyske Mon, 15 Mar 2010 18:48:13 +0000 http://jasonjcrawford.com/?p=437#comment-89 Interesting thoughts. I like the label "representative politics". I think the same mechanism is at work at a much more fundamental level. For instance, saying "I love you" seems to take care of the need to actually love that person. So your action would be lacking. In many abusive marriages, the word "love" is uttered frequently, as if to make up for the true actions of love. Extrapolating from this, I would agree with you that watching the film, and making a few clicks online for the petitions, take care of everyone's need to do something. These moralizing documentaries are ultimately just a piece of entertainment for the viewers which makes them feel good about themselves, and they are more than willing to pay for that rush of moral superiority. When the documentary films are objective and not moralizing, the filmmakers have a hard time finding any audience for it, because there is no feel-good value in them. So, I would fundamentally question the motives of the people who advocates this type of film. Ultimately, they are just self-serving, and it shows in their actions. I wrote about the film on my blog, if you are interested: http://alllooksame.com/?p=330 Best, Dyske Interesting thoughts. I like the label “representative politics”. Crawford Mon, 08 Mar 2010 00:24:32 +0000 http://jasonjcrawford.com/?p=437#comment-79 Fair point. I'll say that PRETOMA has managed to organize a groundswell of pressure against the Costa Rican government to vie for transparency on the issue (as a reflection of ending corruption in their politics) while demanding the Supreme Court to move on improving anti-finning laws. And the steps towards changing this have taken place without an online petition. To that extent, what has the online petition surrounding The Cove accomplished? Will the large goals be fulfilled? It's certainly brought awareness and been an online visualization of massive international outrage but as seen with the politics in the IWC or domestically in Japan, that's easily dismissed. I can only hope that when The Cove makes it to theaters in Japan, that the youth there find inspiration to get out and mobilize to demand their government end the slaughter in Taiji (and thensome).
